Originally, this word is a dialect used in Kyeongsangdo and Busan regions.

Actually, this word was not an offensive word in Kyeongsangdo where it was used first. However, its meaning had been changed while it spreaded nationwide, so these days, this word is often used to call a girl disrespectfully .

Sometimes, this word is used to call each other friendly among girls who have friendship.

There is a song named “가시나” about this word. It is sung by K-POP singer – 선미(Sunmi) and her agency officially announced this word was not related to any negative meaning such as a bitch. 2017년 가수 선미가 이 단어를 제목으로 하는 가시나란 노래를 발표하였다. 기획사에서는 공식적으로 제목의 가시나는 부정적인 의미를 가지고 있지 않으며, 1)가시가 나다, 2)나를 떠나시나? 3)아름다운 꽃의 무리 란 세가지 의미가 있다고 발표하였다. 하지만 일부 사람들은 의도적으로 “계집아이”가 연상될수 있는 다중적인 의미를 가진 이 단어를 제목으로 한것이라 생각하고 있다.
